Welcome back to BSC, ye pop media wizards. Have we got some movie news for you today!

M. Night Shyamalan. He’s a hero to some. An annoyance to others.

Will Smith. He’s an American icon. Jaden Smith. He’s quickly following in his father’s movie-making, money-making footsteps.

Mix the three celebs together and what do you get? Maybe a blockbuster film.

Deadline.com has the exclusive that “Sony Pictures Entertainment has signed Will Smith, and son Jaden Smith, to star in an untitled futuristic science fiction adventure film that will be directed by M. Night Shyamalan.” Set in the future, the film will follow a young boy as he traverses “an abandoned planet on a space ship that has crashed. On board is his estranged father.” Will and Jaden also appeared together in the drama The Pursuit of Happyness.

Shyamalan will direct the script he wrote with Gary Whitta, and Overbrook’s James Lassiter and Jada Pinkett Smith will produce with Shyamalan. Hey, its a family affair! Shyamalan may not be your cup of tea, but the director who favors the city of Philadelphia, doesn’t give up, and of that I’m glad. Here are my feelings about a few of his films.

The Sixth Sense (writer, director, cameo appearance)…A+ : This film helped re-awaken the American horror genre and established Shyamalan’s smart, suspenseful style, including his adherence to a set of rules and clues in his film work.

Unbreakable (writer, director, cameo appearance)…B - : There was some style in this brooding super hero homage, but perhaps the movie was too subtle to catch widespread love.

The Village (writer, director, cameo appearance)… C + : Another Hitchcock-ian premise comes to us in a way similar to the delivery of his Signs film. Stories like these have a fan base, and M. Night does his darnedest to infuse style and engrossing human drama, but critics found its secrets too obvious.

Devil (producer and writer)…B+ : I may be alone in sentiment, but for me, Devil marked Shyamalan’s return to good form (especially following the fiasco that was Lady in the Water). I’m looking forward to the two additional films in the Night Chronicles Trilogy. But, remember, M. Night did not direct this one. Is he ready to get back on that horse? Are audiences ready? Will Will and Jaden make the difference? When we know more, you will, too!
