3D covers to grace classic science fiction novels

Random House Group imprint Vintage Classics has announced that it will publish a collection of science fiction novels with 3D covers.
Five classic titles will be launched with the special covers in April 2011, including Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne.
Planet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle, Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World and The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Tales by H.P. Lovecraft are the remaining titles in the series.
Suzanne Dean, creative director at Random House Group, commented: 'It was a real team effort to produce the covers and was one of the most excitable cover meetings ever when we presented the series.'
The publisher also pointed out that 3D has been a popular medium with science fiction fans since it was first used in the films of the 1950s and noted its recent revival in productions such as Avatar and Beowulf.
Earlier this year, Vintage launched a competition for young illustrators, offering them the opportunity to design a new cover for Colson Whitehead's coming-of-age novel Sag Harbor.
