The big screen adaptation of BBC’s popular science fiction show Doctor Who, which stars a time traveling, eccentric humanoid alien known as Doctor Who is in the works. It is currently being written by former show runner Russell T. Davies and has an expected release date some time in 2012.

An article which was eventually deleted said the movie’s story line will be about The Doctor, “On a journey through time and space with a crew of volunteers treating humanity’s illnesses brought on by invading aliens. He cures the bubonic plague and then goes to Africa to fight Ebola.” The movie studio creating the film will not confirm or deny the leaked information, but they have confirmed that Depp will star as the Doctor.

Doctor Who holds the record for the longest running and most successful science fiction show. This is based on overall broadcast ratings, DVD and book sales, iTunes traffic and illegal downloads. The show has aired on and off since 1963.
